Happy New Year!!

Picture
Welcome to 2018 and best wishes to you in the coming New Year! I hope your holidays were packed with joy and relaxation spent with friends and family, and had some time to yourself.  Now with the dust settling from the first week of franticness, have you made your resolutions yet?
I would like to share the importance of why you should make New Year Resolutions and some helpful tips and motivation on how to better achieve them.
But first…some quick trivia: Who were the first known people to celebrate the New Year?
  • Babylonians
  • Romans
  • Mongolians
  • Americans
Answer: Babylonians.  4,000 years ago, ancient Babylonians had an 11 day celebration which fell on the first new moon after the spring equinox called Akitu.  Resolutions were made at that time to keep good standing with their gods usually related to debt or borrowed farm equipment.[1]

The Importance of New Year’s Resolutions: Becoming Your Own Leader

New Year’s Resolutions are a chance for an evaluation of how to improve ourselves through self-reflection and by doing so we are exercising one of the main traits of leadership.  The reflections can be as small as to continue/improve positive habits or as large as adding positive habit or eliminating negative habit.  A paper published in the journal Educational Management Administration & Leadership stated that “truly authentic leadership might only be possible for those leaders who have the commitment and courage to come to know and understand the full extent of the influential power of their whole inner Self”[2]

Helpful Tips & Motivation:
SMART Habits with a Similar Community

In order to better achieve your resolutions, follow the acronym SMART[3] (for the sake of brevity I did not go through a SMART protocol with each resolution).  The protocol effectiveness was tested within a classroom setting for group projects andpublished in the journal Developments in Business Simulation and Experimental Learning.  The research found that “teams utilizing the SMART goals template will outperformed teams that do not utilized the template.”[4]

  • Specific – there should be a clear outcome(s)
  • Measurable – use numeric values to measure
  • Attainable – create sub goals with small rewards that accumulate to a main goal
  • Relevant – motivation comes from within because of a change YOU desire not pressure from outside influences (individuals or culture)
  • Time-based – each goal should have a date associated with it that adds up to a final date of completion

But it is not as easy as following a protocol.  Understanding that it’s about establishing a change or continuing of habits is the secret.  A habit will usually take approximately 21 days to develop which has room for a minimal amount of errors and lapses – you are human after all!  Don’t let a small slip up stop your progression, be flexible when needed.  You can do it!!

Another great secret is to find an individual or community that shares the similar goals.  With someone sharing your goal it will help support through motivation and accountability as well as someone to celebrate with!!!

With the majority of New Year’s Resolutions revolving around health and prosperity financially through saving money and staying at work, the application of Chiropractic Practices and Principles can aid with those goals.  Studies have shown the burden of back pain on health and productivity within the workplace[5] and research has shown benefits in cost effectiveness of chiropractic into healthcare[6].  Benefits of chiropractic have been shown to effect virtually all aspects of health from point of suffering including low back pain[7], migraines[8], gait issues[9], pregnancy[10], immunity[11], and overall most importantly quality[12] and longevity of life through DNA repair![13]
